About Lawyer's Committee for RI
The Lawyers’ Committee for Rhode Island is a group of attorneys that has come together to hold the government accountable to the law, and protect people, groups and institutions in Rhode Island, by organizing an effective and rapid response by Rhode Island lawyers. LCRI was created because, where there is government overreach in violation of the law, lawyers have the tools and the duty to protect those who are impacted.
LCRI is incorporating as a Rhode Island Nonprofit Corporation.
Our model has several pieces.
Identifying and preparing for current and emerging legal issues that are impacting or will impact people, groups, and institutions in Rhode Island. These include impacts to federal funding of nonprofits, immigrants and international students, reproductive rights, education institutions, free speech and assembly, diversity initiatives, courts and the legal profession.
Creation of issue-specific working groups that organize legal resources to respond where they are needed.
Ongoing communication with communities and groups throughout the state so we are able to anticipate harm and learn actual impacts as they occur, for a rapid and meaningful response.
Connections with legal experts in national organizations like ACLU and Democracy Forward to ensure actions here in Rhode Island are informed by the latest and best legal thinking.
Recruitment of volunteer attorneys in all areas, backed up with training and support.
LCRI is staffed with two experienced litigation attorneys who are employed full-time, moving forward all aspects of LCRI.
